_Life is short: Why not cover your body in art?
Life abroad can include a multitude of new experiences that you’ll never want to forget. One way to forever imprint a memory in your mind is to get it permanently imprinted on your skin. Tattoos are taboo in the realm of parents, but when you’re 3,000 miles away, what better way to spend that last 1,000 Kč before getting on the plane back to the States?
Choosing the right shop, even in America, is crucial to your tattoo and piercing experience. Alien Tattoo & Piercing is both accommodating and relatively cheap compared to the States. Also, all of their artists speak English, so have no fear! Your Beatles quote will come out word-for-word exactly as you intended.
We talked with NYU sophomore Elena Baker, whose visit to Alien was her first-ever tattoo experience.
Survival Guide: How did Alien come onto your radar in the first place?
Elena Baker: Before I went, I e-mailed a bunch of shops around Prague to ask about prices and to see whether or not they spoke English. Alien responded really quickly and seemed really nice. We confirmed prices and the design through e-mail.
SG: Did you have friends come along or did you take the trek alone?
EB: I brought friends who also had tattoos to see their responses. Since it was my first tatt, I wanted to make sure that people with experiences in America could give me a good comparison.
SG: And what were your friends’ responses?
EB: They agreed that the sanitation was up to par and the place seemed very clean. Everyone got really good vibes from the artist and the overall atmosphere.
SG: What was the setup and vibe of the tattoo room?
EB: When you first walk in it seems kind of sketch, because it’s one big room for both tattoo artists. Since I was getting a tattoo down my spine, I had to be topless. So when someone else walked in, I was a little shocked at first. But it was fine. Also, the floor kind of shakes when people walk around, so I was little nervous my tattoo wouldn’t come out straight. It came out perfect though.
SG: Did you feel the prices were reasonable?
EB: The minimum was 1,000 Kč, which is pretty standard for America, too. I paid 2,000 Kč for five words, which I felt was a great deal since it was in a pretty tough place.
SG: So you would recommend this shop to a friend?
EB: Yes, the guys were super chill and I’m more than happy with the outcome.
SG: Why wouldn’t you tell your parents about this?
EB: Well, my parents are pretty easygoing about this stuff, but I could see why someone else wouldn’t want to. I mean, tattoos are permanent. They’re on your body for the rest of your life and a lot of parents don’t understand why someone would want that.
